Music Ministries

St. Mary’s Cathedral has a long history of musical excellence dating all the way back to the mid 1800s. Visitors to the Cathedral will immediately notice that the Nave, in addition to its awe-inspiring visual beauty, is one of the finest acoustic spaces for both choral and congregational singing in the greater Memphis area. In addition, St. Mary’s is blessed with a magnificent pipe organ originally built by the Kilgen Organ Company in the 1920s and significantly expanded, modified, and restored by various builders over the ensuing century. The present-day organ has been carefully removed and stored during the pendency of the ongoing repairs to the ceiling of the Nave. Donations to the St. Mary’s Organ Fund are gratefully accepted to help us to defray the significant costs of removal and re-installation of the pipe organ.

Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir welcomes singers of all ages. We lead the congregational music and the responses of the sung service, proclaim the Psalms and Canticles in the timeless beauty of Anglican Chant and/or Plainsong, and present sacred choral anthems that reflect both the rich heritage of the Episcopal Church and other liturgical traditions as well as the vibrant diversity of the Christian community as it exists in the here and now. Rehearsals are bi-weekly on Wednesdays and at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday before church. No audition is required; please contact Richard Townley or Dennis Janzer if you are interested in sharing your talents as a member of the Cathedral Choir.

Schola Cantorum

The schola is an auditioned chamber ensemble of four to six singers who also double as section leaders for the Cathedral Choir. The schola enriches our worship with music ranging from Renaissance polyphony to modern spirituals. Members of the schola also regularly share their exquisite vocal talents with us in the form of sacred arias and vocal solos and duos. Please contact Richard Townley or Dennis Janzer if you are interested in auditioning for this elite ensemble.
